Nancy Lincoln Grigsby’s Wedding Dinner

Abraham Lincoln’s older sister, Nancy, also called Sally or Sarah, was born on February 10th, 1807. In late August, 1826, Nancy married Aaron Grigsby, and their wedding dinner featured many frontier delicacies. This excerpt from “Abe Lincoln of Pigeon Creek” lists the menu:

2 fat wild turkeys roasted a rich brown
a saddle of deer meat
6 large vegetable pies–full of turnips, beans and potatoes
a big bowl of wild honey
a bowl of maple sugar
at least a hundred fried Kentucky wonders
watermellon [sic] preserves
cherry preserves
bushel of pawpaws
